My recent trip from Port-au-Prince to Santo Domingo with American Airlines (AA) left me feeling a bit ruffled. While security is obviously important, the briefing from my colleagues about AA's "extraordinary security measures" didn't exactly inspire confidence.
Early Bird Gets the Security Check:
Despite the short, one-hour flight, my travel administrator insisted I arrive at the airport extra early at 6:00 am for a 9:45 am departure. While I initially planned for a 7:00 am arrival, I heeded their advice to avoid any potential issues. As it turned out, it was a good call.
Security Shenanigans:
The security process itself was quite frustrating. They asked me to remove my shoes and belts not once, not twice, but three times within a short span. They also went through my luggage multiple times, which slowed things down considerably. Despite the inconvenience, I cooperated fully.
Surprise Overbooking Notice:
After checking in and receiving my boarding pass, I noticed a paragraph in the accompanying flyer that caught me off guard: a notice about overbooked flights. This concerned me, even though there seemed to be empty seats on my particular flight. I thanked my travel agent for their advice on arriving early, which might have helped me avoid any issues in case of an overbooked situation.
Overall:
While the flight itself was likely uneventful due to its short duration, the experience with the excessive security checks and the overbooking notice left a negative impression of the airline.
Next time if you want to get rid of a lot of Karma, get an AA flight in any european airport, and then land in any US airport, I would recommend Miami International airport round early december, and then take a plane to any Latin American destination with just 2 hours between flight, then you will thank to those 12 hours flight in BA, and the 3 days to leave and reach your country.
