Dinner at Taverna Du Liban with a Surprise

I rejoined my senior colleagues for another dinner, this time venturing into Lebanese cuisine at Taverna Du Liban. Coincidentally, it was the night of US President Barack Obama's surprise visit to Kabul, a news tidbit we only learned about the following morning. Perhaps this explained the heightened security measures – armed guards meticulously checking guests upon entry. Despite the extra security, the restaurant buzzed with activity, filled with a mix of locals and foreigners.

Kabul's Lebanese restaurant scene has seen its fair share of turnover, but Taverna Du Liban has stood the test of time. As we perused the menu, I noticed a delightful trend – tables overflowing with mezze, a selection of small plates like hummus, tabbouleh, and Lebanese salad. It was easy to understand why – these flavorful appetizers could easily fill you up before even reaching the main course. And for a relaxing post-meal experience, the restaurant offered shisha pipes, perfect for enjoying in the garden during warmer months.

Being vegetarian, I was happy to find a good selection of options. I opted for a delightful lentil soup, foul (a dish of fava beans and chickpeas simmered with garlic, lemon, and olive oil), batten jan rehab (grilled eggplant with green peppers, tomato, mint, olive oil, and garlic), and falafel (deep-fried chickpea fritters flavored with garlic and onion). The food was delicious, and we thoroughly enjoyed our two-hour stay. To top it all off, the restaurant surprised us with a complimentary dessert – a decadent chocolate cake with ice cream.

We returned to our guesthouse feeling satisfied and secure after a lovely evening.
