The Human Connection: Beyond Expectations

Reflecting on Kabir's Doha

The words of Kabir's doha echo in my mind today:
"चलती चक्की देख के दिया कबीरा रोय, दो पाटन के बीच में साबुत बचाव ना कोई"
Translation : "Seeing the millstone turning, Kabir wept. Between the two grinding stones, nothing remains whole."

Life throws many experiences our way, presenting us with a multitude of circumstances. In today's world, the very definition of relationships has become complex. At the core of these relationships lie expectations. When we contemplate this, we realize how many expectations we hold for each bond. Only when these expectations and desires cease do love and humanity truly flourish in a relationship. Most of the complications that arise in relationships stem from these very expectations.

Envy: The Poison of Expectations

Someone once told me, "Typically, when someone builds a bigger house than ours or buys a more expensive car, it doesn't bother us. But when a relative does the same, we feel envy." This observation sparked a deep reflection within me. If envy exists, then the relationship cannot be one of true humanity.

Living Free from Envy

I resolved to be free from envy. This doesn't imply a disregard for my own needs. If I have a need, I should have the capability to fulfil it. A capable person is generally content. However, defining "capability" itself is a complex question, as needs vary greatly from person to person.

The Human Connection

The human connection is built on acceptance and love. When we are free from expectations and envy, we can truly accept others for who they are. We share in their joys and sorrows, unconditionally.

Conclusion

Kabir's doha teaches us that only by living free from expectations can we experience true happiness and forge genuine human connections.

Additional Thoughts :
  • We can strengthen our human connections by minimizing our own needs and prioritizing the needs of others.
  • Forgiveness and compassion are the cornerstones of a humane relationship.
  • We should always strive to maintain a positive outlook towards others.
