Shiela Dikshit, fondly called "Aunty No. 1" by Delhi residents, was a political force to be reckoned with. Born in Kapurthala (Punjab) in 1938, the daughter of an army officer, she married into a prominent political family. Her father-in-law, Uma Shankar Dikshit, was a veteran freedom fighter and Congress leader.
Dikshit's political journey began in 1969. In 1984, she entered electoral politics, winning a Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh. Her skills were recognized by Rajiv Gandhi, who inducted her into his cabinet in 1986.
A decisive shift came in 1998. After winning the prestigious Gole Market seat in Delhi, she was appointed Chief Minister. Victories in subsequent elections (2003 and 2008) cemented her position as Delhi's longest-serving Chief Minister.
Known for her approachability and understanding of public needs, Dikshit focused on practical solutions that improved daily life. Her leadership style was praised for its balance and effectiveness.
More than just a politician, Dikshit was known for her elegant style, favoring silk and cotton sarees.
