A Treasured Lesson: The Poem My Father Gave Us

There's a special poem my father instilled in us during our childhood. It wasn't just words; he patiently explained its meaning, making it a cornerstone of our growth. Now, I find myself carrying on this tradition, weaving the poem into the lives of my own children.

The poem itself is a simple one, yet rich with wisdom:

Work while you work,
Play while you play,
To be useful and happy,
That is the way.

All things you do,
Do with your mind,
Things done by halves,
Are never done right.

One thing at a time,
And that done well,
Is a very good rule,
As many could tell.

Moments should never
be trifled away,
So, work while you work
And play while you play.

Building a Foundation

These lines offer a powerful message about focus and balance. They remind us to give our full attention to the task at hand, whether it's completing schoolwork or helping with chores. But just as important, they emphasize the joy of dedicated playtime.

Embedding the Message

To make this poem a part of my children's lives, I use a variety of strategies:

  • Reciting Together: We recite the poem regularly, discussing its meaning and how it applies to our daily lives. For example, we might talk about focusing on homework before enjoying a fun afternoon playing outside.
  • Bringing it to Life: I connect the poem to everyday situations. Finishing a task might be rewarded with a favourite game, reinforcing the concept of balanced effort and enjoyment.
  • Visual Learning: I found some beautifully illustrated versions of the poem online, making it visually engaging for my children.
  • Activities that Reflect: We plan activities that mirror the poem's message. Dedicated "work time" is followed by dedicated "playtime," creating a clear distinction between focused effort and joyful leisure.

The Power of the Poem

Sharing this poem goes beyond simply memorizing words. It fosters valuable skills:

  • Focus and Concentration: The poem emphasizes giving your full attention to a task, a crucial skill for learning and development.
  • Time Management: It highlights the importance of dividing time between responsibilities and leisure, promoting a sense of balance.
  • Appreciation for Play: The poem reminds us to savour playtime and find joy in moments of relaxation.

By incorporating this poem into our family life, I'm passing on a treasure my father gave me. It's a way of instilling valuable lessons that will benefit my children not just now but throughout their lives.
